World Premiere of First OUR EARTH Opera This Sunday

We hope you’ll join us Sunday, February 10, at Town Hall at 2 pm for the first performance of Heron and the Salmon Girl, the first opera in the new Our Earth trilogy. Seattle composer Eric Banks is writing three brief operas for Seattle Opera, with libretti by Irene Keliher, set here in the Pacific Northwest. Sunday’s premiere performance features Seattle Opera’s singers and Youth Chorus and the Seattle Youth Symphony. (Photo from rehearsal, above, by Robert Wade, with tenor John Coons, baritone Thomas Thompson, soprano Sonia Perez, and the Youth Chorus.)

Our Earth tells a story of local animals and people—including people who can transform into salmon!—and an ecosystem in danger. Heron and the Salmon Girl begins when the salmon fail to return to the sea one spring. A hungry orca, a helpful heron, a grumpy fisherman, and a girl whose brother is in trouble in the big city set off to find out what happened to the missing fish. Later on in the trilogy, our characters will continue their quest into a river valley and all the way up into the watershed, atop a forested mountain. Find information about the premieres of the second and third Our Earth operas here: http://www.seattleopera.org/discover/learn/family/our_earth.aspx

Our Earth is produced by Seattle Opera in partnership with Seattle Youth Symphony and The Nature Conservancy. If you’d like to win tickets to Sunday’s performance, which also features former Seattle Opera Young Artist Adina Aaron singing Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder, we’ll be giving away five pairs Friday afternoon.
